Pilot with schools in South Burlington, Vermont

In the spring of 2008, The Inner Resilience Program began a pilot program with 40 teachers from the South Burlington School district. The goal of the pilot is to implement core program activities in a site outside NYC and to adapt the program to the needs of teachers, students and parents in a suburban school setting. The work includes helping teachers to nurture their own inner lives, and preparing them to teach calming and attentional practices to their students using the curriculum Building Resilience From the Inside Out.

The pilot consists of:

  • A kickoff meeting to introduce educators to the program
  • A monthly wellness meeting for the teachers involved
  • A 2-day intensive training in the curriculum
  • A parent workshop, explaining the use of the curriculum in the classroom
  • An overnight retreat for the pilot group
  • Ongoing staff development, including demonstration of classroom lessons
The pilot is being funded in part by the Talk About Wellness Initiative, and also by the South Burlington School District. The New England Network is conducting an evaluation of the program’s effectiveness.

Professional Development with
DREAM Charter School

In 2008, The Inner Resilience Program began a partnership with the DREAM Charter School, a new school in East Harlem founded on best practices and dedicated to providing a comprehensive education to children in the community.  The Inner Resilience Program took all staff on a residential retreat in August 2008 before the school’s opening that focused on community-building and social/emotional learning. We continue to provide a range of professional development services to the school, including:

  • Training in conflict resolution
  • Workshops on stress management
  • Monthly community wellness meetings for school staff
